Knights Cruise to 13-0 with Win over Green Mountain College
The Green Knights improved their season long winning streak to 13-0 with a decisive win over host Green Mountain College on Sunday afternoon. Senior Nick Simpson (Bay City, MI) led the way, scoring a game-high 30 points on 13-for-23 shooting. Simpson also grabbed nine boards and dished six assists.
The Knights (13-0) opened the game with a pair of three pointers from junior guard Kevin Carr (Westminster, MD) and never looked back, opening up a 12 point advantage seven minutes into the contest.
Green Mountain, led by sophomore Kenneth Williams’ 21 points, battled back, cutting the visitors’ advantage to 23-18 after newcomer junior Ben LaCure (Hudson, MA) drilled a three-pointer with 11 minutes remaining. VTC, however, widened their edge to 22 at the break, thanks in large part to a 55.6 percent shooting effort including 41.7 percent from beyond the arc.
Any chance to get back in the game quickly disappeared for GMC as the Knights went on a 24-4 run to begin the second half, opening up an insurmountable 38 point edge.
Senior forward Trent Roleau (Lincoln, VT) notched a double-double with 24 points and 16 boards while Kevin Carr added 22 points with six assists and four steals. VTC dominated on the glass, grabbing 54 rebounds to GMC’s 29. Freshman Kwei General-Vanderpuije scored 13 points and hauled down 9 rebounds.
Coach Dyer “thought we were a bit sluggish in the first half. Our defense wasn’t intense and we were shooting too many early shots. I think the guys took those things to heart after our halftime talk. We came out on fire in the first five minutes of the second half. The defense provided multiple fast break opportunities. After that opening second half run, the game was under wraps.”
