Men's and Women's Soccer Shutout by Machias
Machias, ME - On Wednesday, October 10th both the men's and women's soccer teams of Vermont Tech were shutout by the Clippers of the University of Maine at Machias. The men were defeated 6-0, while the women fell by a final of 5-0.
The men hung in the game for much of the first half, not allowing a score until 36:20 when Franck Zeba found the back of the net with an unassisted goal. Just four minutes later the Clippers extended their lead to 2-0 with Tyler Troup hitting on a crossing pass from Christian Olmedo. The second half was all Machias, as the Clippers definitively put away the visitors with four quick goals. The game finished with 49 shots for Machias, 15 on goal, compared with just 7 for the Knights, with 4 of those on goal. Senior Goalie Nate James (Arlington, VT) did his best making 9 saves for VTC.
The women's game saw Machias take control from the opening quarter of the half, taking full advantage of the Lady Knights having but ten players who made the trip. Besides having just ten players, the Knights were also missing four starters, forcing others to step up and play out of position. The Clippers scored their first goal at 11:30 (Jenny Guzman), their second at 13:48 (Emma LeGallais), followed by three more before the end of the half to make it 5-0. LeGallais finished the game with a hat-trick. The second half saw no scoring and mostly midfield play as a soggy sloppy field saturated by the hard rain confined the movement of the players. Senior Ashley Lockery (Enosburg, VT) managed the only shot of the game for the Lady Knights. Sophomore Elise Coolbeth (Wolcott, VT) faced 22 shots on goal, saving 17.
The losses left the men with a record of 3-8-1, 2-6-1 and the women at 3-10, 1-6. In contrast, Machias raised their records to 13-3, 12-0 and 7-3, 5-1, respectively for the men and women. VTC continues thier Maine roadtrip on Thursday the 11th as they travel down to South Portland to take on Southern Maine. This will be the last regular season contest of the year for both teams.
