Knight Women Grab First Win of Young Season
Freshman Mallory Fischer's Hat-trick Keys Victory
Randolph Center, VT - Vermont Tech used a steady offensive attack and excellent play from freshmen Mallory Fischer (Jericho, VT) and Ashley Young (Concord, VT) to defeat Fisher College by the final of 7-1 on their home field on Sunday, September 9th.
The Knights took control of the game from the opening kick, beginning with a barrage of four shots within the first five minutes. The Falcons of Fisher, however, were not so easily deterred as they picked up their defensive effort to again and again turn away the VTC shots. Deanna Morency did her best as she faced 37 total shots, 21 on goal, in the net for the Falcons. Halie Shea (So./Lisbon, NH) finally broke through with the first goal of the day at 24:08, with Freshman Emma Horowitz-McCadden (Montpelier, VT) getting the first assist of her career.
Less than two minutes later Mallory Fischer made a long run, out-sprinting the defense and connecting on her first goal of the day and her career to put Vermont Tech up 2-0. Fischer ended up with three goals on the day, including finishing out the scoring fat the 76:34 mark, making the final score 7-1 in favor of the Knights.
In other firsts, Ashley Young put one in the back of the net early in the second half, the first of her college career. Young was also a key component in the overall win aside from simply scoring a goal, as she continually won 50-50 balls and energized the team from several sports on the pitch.
For Fisher College, Rebecca Streeter scored their lone goal of the day, unassisted at 76:16.
Ashley Lockerby (Sr./Enosburg, VT) continued her stellar play that last year earned her YSCC All-Conference status. She netted two goals in the game to add to her two she scored against the University of Maine Presque Isle a week ago. Elise Coolbeth (So./Wolcott, VT) had a relatively easy day in goal, only having to turn away four of the five shots she faced in order to garner the win.
Vermont Tech is now 1-2, 0-0 on the season, and next travel to Pine Manor College in Chestnut Hill, MA on Saturday, September 15th for another non-conference clash. This will be followed on Sunday the 16th with a road contest in Amherst, MA where the team will open its Yankee Small College Conference campaign against Hampshire College.
