Lady Knights Finish Regular Season on High Note
Gonier's late free throws seal 64-60 win at SUNY Canton
The Vermont Tech Lady Knights ended their regular season with a victory Sunday afternoon, February 19th on the road versus SUNY Canton by a final of 64-60. The game was back and forth the entire time, with the Knights finally sealing the win with 4 clutch free throws in the final minute by Freshman Heather Gonier (Williamstown, VT).
The Knights came out hot, with Junior Kelly Vellek (Burlington, VT) hitting some early 3s from well beyond the arc, on her way to 19 points and 8 rebounds, and Sophomore point guard Ama Baker (Fitchburg, MA) penetrating the lane to garner some easy layups. The Knights were up 27-17 with 8:40 left in the first half, but then allowed the Roos back into the game as the home team reeled off 11 straight points to surge ahead 28-27. Kaitlin Myers keyed the run, eventually finishing with a Canton-high 19 points and 11 rebounds. Despite Baker and Vellek scoring big in the first half for Vermont Tech, 17 and 11 points respectively, the Roos closed the half on a 20-5 run, to put the Knights down 37-32 at the break.
The Knights remained down, but only by a slight margin, for much of the second half before putting together a rally late in the contest. Vermont Tech trimmed the lead down to a bucket at 58-56 with under five minutes left and pulled ahead after two free throws and a layup from Baker, who was on her way to a game-high 28 points, including 3-4 from 3 and 7-8 from the line. The Green Knights then sealed the win going 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the final minute of play.
The Lady Knights finish the season with a 6-17 record, winning 2 of their last 3 on the road to the YSCC Playoffs. The girls have a first round game versus the #1 seeded University of Maine-Augusta on Thursday at 3pm. The game will take place at NHTI in Concord, NH.
