Women's Basketball Back to Winning Ways
Fusco's double-double (12 points, 11 assists) propels Knights on the road
The Lady Knights used tight defense and nearly 50% shooting from the floor to defeat Nashua CC on the road by a final of 79-22.
Vermont Tech started fast, using precise offense to garner open shots while a stifling defense held the home team scoreless for the first number of minutes of the game. At the end of the game, the Knights had held their opponents to only 19% shooting from the field, while grabbing 22 steals and only giving the ball up via turnover a mere 10 times.
The team used a balanced attack, a deep bench, with each player on the floor for at least 20 minutes, and excellent team play, sharing the ball for 21 assists in the victory. Senior Abby Fusco (East Montpelier, VT) led the team with 11 assists and finished off a double-double by also knocking in 12 points. Junior Kelly Vellek (Burlington, VT) and Sophomore Kelsey Ward (Swanton, VT) helped the cause by hitting 16 and 15 points repsectively. Ward also had a double-double, finishing with a co-game high 10 rebounds to go along with the 10 of Freshman Alyssa Casssanelli (Barkhamsted, CT).
At halftime the score was 50-8, and although the second half saw a slow-down in the offensive output of the Knights they kept working the entire game. The final rebounding margin showed their effort, in that they held a 55-29 advantage.
With the win the Lady Knights improve their record to 2-3, 2-2 and take a difficult road trip over the weekend to Maine. The women play Central Maine on Saturday, 12/3 at 1pm while on Sunday they take on another YSCC foe in Southern Maine at 12pm.
