Lady Knights Fall to St. Joe's (VT)
Baker Scores 26 in Loss
Rutland, VT - The College of St. Joseph's Fighting Saints were able to come back from a 14 points halftime deficit to defeat the Lady Knights of Vermont Tech 67-63.
The game was a tale of two halves, with the Knights winning the first 38-24 and the Saints winning the second 43-25. The Saints changed the pace of the game with efficient offense and the employment of a 2-3 zone defense that the Knights simply were not able to attack.
VTC was led in scoring by Ama Baker (Jr./Fitchburg, MA) who completed the game with 26 points, 9-9 from the free throw line, and 6 assists. Also scoring in double figures were Kelly Vellek (Sr./Burlington, VT) who had 14, and Paige Wells (So./Orleans, VT) who grabbed another double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Brooke Griswold led CSJ with 22 points, hitting on 5-13 threes and 7-8 from the free throw line. The Saints had two players with double-doubles, Kelly Festa scored 13 and pulled down 16 rebounds, while Shaionica Speight had 14 points, 13 boards.
The key to the game was clearly on the boards, as St. Joe's destroyed the Lady Knights in rebounding 44-23. The includes the Saints pulling down an impressive 21 offensive rebounds. In addition, both teams made the mose of their chances from the free throw line, with the Knights knocking down 17-24 (71%) and the Saints hitting of 15-23 (65%).
The loss drops VTC to 9-13, 6-5 YSCC. Their next contest for the ladies will be Thursday, February 7th at home against Fisher College. The game is slated to start at 530pm. VTC defeated the Falcons in thier first matchup this year.
