Knights Clip Owls on Senior Day
Matano Scores 28, Lindsey 25 in Victory
Randolph Center, VT - Behind two players scoring in the 20s and another securing a triple-double, the Vermont Tech Knights clipped the wings of the Owls from the University of Maine Presque Isle by the final of 86-77.
On Senior Day it was a senior, a junior and a freshman who carried the day for the Knights. Vermont Tech Junior Brandon Matano (Honolulu, HI) led a high-scoring first half by hitting on 20 of his eventual game-high 28 points. The 20 included an incredible 5-7 from 3. Senior Josh Lindsey did his part both in the half and the game, scoring 12 points in the first and 25 overall. He also grabbed 6 rebounds. Freshman Sam Marler (Sydney, Australia) made strides in the first half towards his eventual triple-double. In the half he had 7 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists. He finished with 13 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists to complete the impressive feat.
The Owls would not be easily put down, however, as Claude Louis scored 15 of his 19 point total and Partick Manifold helped the cause of the visitors with 12 of his team-high 25 in the period. He also finished with 10 rebounds, to grab a double-double. The score at the half was 46-40 in favor of the Knights.
The second half saw the Knights' leading margin grow slowly, until they broke the game open with a 14-0 run. Lindsey scored 5 during the run, which was keyed by Freshman Kyle Kissenberth's (Winter Park, FL) back-to-back 3s and concluded with Matano hitting a 3 of his own. The run ended at the half way mark on the second with the Knights up 72-53.
The Owls were able to bring the game back a little bit, from the 19 point margin it was at the ten minute mark to 9 by the end of the game.
In his final home game, Senior Alex Tyrrell (Sydney, Australia) scored 12 points.
Michael Warner had 12 points and 7 rebounds for UMPI.
With the win, the men are now 18-8, 12-2 YSCC. The Sunday game versus Central Maine CC has been canceled due to weather, so the Knights will conclude their regular season on the road at NHTI on Tuesday, February 12th. The game will be immediately preceded by the women. The NHTI men are both the YSCC Western Division #1 seed and the #1 team in the entire country according to the latest USCAA Poll.
