Women's soccer takes first win of the season

Randolph Center, VT - The womens' soccer team won thier first game of the season against visiting UMaine Presque Isle in over time.
The Knights got on the board very quickly, just 1:48 into the match Dayna Goodell received a pass at the corner of UMPI's goal box, turned and sent a pass across to an open Austen LaFrance who sent a blistering shot right over the goalie's hands. For the next 42 minutes the teams played pretty even ball back and forth with VTC holding the lead in shots and shots on goal. At the 43:13 Presque Isle's Jordi Legassie scored on a breakaway to even the match at 1-1. 18 minutes into the second half, with an assist by Kiana Royer, Kirstin Ward got the first of her 2 goals on the day. VTC kept the pressure up hard the rest of the second hald, until UMPI's Sofia Crouse assisted by Jordi scored at the 82nd minute to tie the contest. Shots were had by both teams in the remaining 8 minutes but both goalies remained strong and kept the ball out of their respective nets.
In the first 10 minute overtime VTC created more chances than UMPI and had some real solid possessions. As time was winding down Kirstin Ward sent a blistering shot headed for the upper 90 right corner, only to strike the post as time expired. Into the 2nd overtime, VTC was high pressure and Ward sent other strike on the goal, this time a lofted shot that kept the goalie backpedaling only to have the game-ender drop into the goal 46 seconds in, giving Ward with the game winning goal, assisted by Madison Distel.
The Knights play on the road at conference opponent Paul Smith's College on the 22nd.
