Women's Soccer fall 3-2 to Hampshire College
Randolph Center, VT – After an even first half at 0-0 an intense second half Vermont Tech Women's soccer was not able to hold on to the win as they fall 3-2 to Hampshire College conference game.
Vermont Tech opened the scoring off a direct kick in the 57th minute with a goal by Freshman Katlyn Newton (Morrisville, VT). Newton was taken down 22 yards out by Hampshire defense, as the wall was organizing Newton saw an opportunity and capitalized on it as she put the ball out of reach of Hampshire College goalkeeper Lea Sweeney.
Hampshire College battled back and was able to get on the board seven minutes later when Chiara Forrester got her foot on the ball after a miss play by Vermont Tech's defense and making the score 1-1. For the next 15 minutes both squads had chances to get the go ahead goal, but in the 80th minute it was Hampshire College Amani Smith who found the back of the net.
With Hampshire College up 2-1 in conference play Vermont Tech pushed forward on offense to try and get the equalizer on the board, but in the 89th minute Natalie Strohm was able to take off on a fast break and put the ball past Sophomore Goalkeeper Dani Cochran (St. Johnsbury, VT) to put Hampshire up 3-1.
In the final minute of the game the Green Knight never let down as the team kept pushing forward on Hampshire College defenses. Freshman Kirstin Ward (Franklin, VT) was able to get a cross off, the ball than bounced off a Hampshire College players back, which than fell perfectly for Newton to volley the shot into the back of the net to make the score 3-2 with only 2 seconds left on the clock.
Hampshire College Sweeney made five saves on the day and Vermont Tech Cochran made 14 saves.
