Knights Cruise Past Seawolves

The Vermont Tech men's basketball team notched their fourteenth win of the season by defeating YSCC rival Southern Maine, 69-61, at the SHAPE center on Saturday afternoon. Senior Kevin Carr's (Westminster, MD) 20 first half points paced the Knights to a 43-43 halftime advantage. The Knights then used a stifling zone defense in the second half and a controlled, disciplined offensive attack to extend the lead and preserve the victory. The Knights limited the Seahawks fast break and three point oriented offense to a mere 17 points in the second half.

Carr was in All American form, hitting 8 of 13 shots from the field and 5 of 6 from the foul line for a game high 25 points. Junior Alex Tyrrell (Sydney, Australia) hit for 16 points and Sophomore Cody Chamberlin (Northfield, VT) added 11 points. Freshman Lucas Dutil (Barre, VT) just missed a double double, scoring 8 points and hauling down 10 rebounds. Junior Jhason Clark (Albany, NY) was welcomed back into the line up. Clarksuffered a fractured kneecap early in the season. In 20 minutes of play Jhason scored six points and grabbed three rebounds.

"This was a solid team victory for us," said Coach John Dyer after the game.  "Kevin was red hot in the first half and we were able to jump out to a nice lead behind his shooting.  However we were playing the game at SM"s pace. They love to run and shoot.  At halftime we talked about dictating the pace and our guys really concentrated on achieving that goal. We forced SM to take quite a few shots late in the shot clock and we patiently ran our offense. The result is that we prevented those 3 point barrage rallies that SM is so capable of, we stretched the lead and won the game. Tyrrell and Carr showed real poise in the second half."

 The Knights are now 14-9 on the season and 7-5 in the YSCC.
