Women's basketball takes the win over College of St. Josephs
Rutland, VT – The Vermont Tech Women's Basketball team (2-1) took an early lead and fought to hold on to the 58-62 win on Tuesday night against College of St. Josephs (CSJ). CSJ made a surge late in the first half to take over the lead 30-27, but it was not enough to last, as new head Coach Jamie Paterson gained his second win in YSCC Conference play last night.
Vermont Tech soared out to an early lead, led by the combination work of Senior Ama Baker (Fitchburg, MA) and Junior Paige Wells (Orleans, VT), who scored VTC's first twelve, points of the game. The Fighting Saints of SCJ got back in to the game and held on to the lead until 10:30 left in the second half.
At the beginning of the second half, Baker was able to make a quick lay-up and the Green Knights never looked back, out-scoring CSJ 12-4 in the last 8 minutes of the game. While the score was tight throughout the second half, Vermont Tech had two key blocks that made the difference in remaining on top. One block came from Wells in the 8th minute to start the surge for the Green Knights and the other came from Shana Linwood-McLaughlin (Cayman Island) in the 6th minute to deny a 3 point basket for the Fighting Saints.
Baker lead the team with a triple double, netting 21 points, grabbing 10 rebounds and dishing out 11 assists. Wells also contributed 14 rebounds and scored 27 points for the Vermont Tech.
The Vermont Tech women return to action this weekend in thier home openers in Randolpn Center, which include YSCC Conference play Saturday November 16 vs. Southern Maine CC hitting at 1PM and Sunday November 17th vs. Central Maine CC at 12PM.
