Bio

Jamal Hughes enters his 5th season as head men's basketball coach. His first season as head coach he led the Knights to a 24-9 record and USCAA Final Four appearance. Jamal plans to take the helm of the Vermont State-  Randolph Basketball program for many years, where he also was a 2-time USCAA All-American as a player. 

2019-2020

In his first season coach Hughes led the Green Knights to an historic 24-9 record. Tying the school record for most wins. The Knights were led by Jeremiah Shaw who was named YSCC Player of the Year. The Knights had 5 players average in double figures. Chance Cole and Drake Perry was named to the YSCC All- Conference teams and point guard Dajaun Johnson led the USCAA in assist with 6.1. Advancing to the national tournament for a second straight year, the Knights upset #3 seed Cincinnati- Clarment 108-100 to advance to the USCAA national Final Four. They would ultimately fall short of the national title game after losing to Penn- State Greater Alleghany. Vermont Tech finished the year averaging 94.3ppg which led the USCAA.

Our team will develop work ethic, leadership, and proper competitive focus. Our goal is to make the Vermont Tech experience the best time of our players' lives and one they will never forget. Our core values/ covenants are Selflessness, Energy, and Excellence.

Prior to his return to the Knights, Jamal was fortunate enough to experience coaching at three different levels of basketball in 4 years. He served as Head Boys Basketball Coach at Freedom Middle School (Franklin,TN) where he led them to a state FINAL 4 appearance and received Coach of the Year. He served as Varsity assistant at Ravenwood High School (Brentwood, TN) where he helped lead them to a top 10 ranking in the state. Jamal also has college experience by assisting in video coordinating, where he helped coordinate film exchange with opposing teams and assisting in player development at Tennessee State.

Jamal currently resides in Rutland, VT with his daughter Alani.
