Lady Knights Dropped by Hampshire
YSCC Foe Outpoints VTC 1-0
Randolph Center, VT- On a breezy afternoon the Hampshire College Women's Soccer team took down the Vermont Tech Lady Knights by a final of 1-0.
Hampshire College used aggressive play and a nose for the ball to defeat Vermont Tech in Randolph Center, VT on Saturday afternoon. This first half was evenly contested with neither side being able to grab momentum. The game brought back memories for both teams, as just a week before they had been involved in a tightly fought game in which the Knights were able to walk away from Amherst, MA with a 2-1 victory. Hampshire was determined to flip the script on the Knights' home turf.
Vermont Tech relentlessly attacked the Hampshire zone in the first half. Six different Lady Knights recorded shots in the period, leading to ten total shots in comparison to eight for the visitors. However, with only four of those ten shots on goal, and the Hampshire goalie Repass playing solid in net the half concluded with the teams knotted at zero.
The second half began much as the first had ended, with both teams putting forth maximum effort to garner every 50-50 ball. It seemed, however, that time and again Hampshire was one step ahead of the Knights. Hampshire recorded the intial six shots of the half before Senior Ashley Lockerby (Enosburg, VT) was able to fire one off for the Knights. That shot for Vermont Tech did not come until the 63:08 mark.
At 65:52, Lovett from Hampshire was able to utilize a flurry of activity in front of the Knight net caused by a corner kick to poke one by goalie Elise Coolbeth (So./Wolcott, VT). Up to that point Coolbeth had saved ever shot face, ending the day saving ten of eleven, but the one that got through put the visitors up 1-0. Despite the home team desperately trying to tie the score, including two shots in the closing minutes by Halie Shea (So./Lisbon, NH) and Alysha Jones (Fr./Morrisville, VT), the one goal was enough for the road team to come away with the win.
Lockerby led the Knights with five shots, one on goal, while Shea trailed her by only one total shot, but tallied three on goal.
While the win was the first of the season for Hampshire, the loss is the third in a row for Vermont Tech, dropping them to 3-5, 1-2. The Knights next hit the road to face NHTI in Concord, NH on Thursday, September 27th. In their first matchup of the season, the Lynx were able to barely defeat the Knights, with the final score ending at 1-0.
